THOUGHTS ON LOVE

I’d like to use Valentine’s Day as a day to reflect on love.  After all, it’s not just Valentine’s Day, but EVERY DAY that is one giant advertisement. At least today the focus (whether you buy something for someone or not) is to show love.  So, with that said, it may get a bit cheesy here on the blog, but I wanted to share three stories that dealt with love. None of them are traditional love stories per say, but show love of family, love of yourself and love of life.

1. Love for family: I saw this for the first time today (though it’s gone viral and you may have already seen it). It’s the story of a “newborn” photo session with a 12-year-old’s adoptive parents. Read the article here.

2. Love for self: This article was part of Huffington Post’s mandatory reading for women called “She Who Dies With the Most Likes Wins”. My favorite line from it is “the truth is that we don’t need everyone to like us, we need a few people to love us”. Read the article here.

3. Love of Life:  for some reason, I started reading Emily Dickinson’s poetry again recently. This short poem I thought was so beautiful and poignant:

Love is anterior to life

Posterior to death

Initial of creation, and

The exponent of breath

One last thought on love: I truly believe that without self love, we are not capable of love for someone else. I believe that you have to have so much love for yourself and for life that it has to overflow in order to truly love someone else. So if nothing else, do something nice for yourself today.

Happy Valentine’s Day everyone.
