WHAT’S MORE PATRIOTIC THAN CLEAN BEACHES

Happy 4th of July!  And just as an obvious reminder, please clean up your trash wherever you are… but especially at the beach. Thanks, and have a great holiday.

KEEPING IT FRESH: JUSTINA BLAKENEY

I have always loved the outside of people’s refrigerators. I think they tell such a vibrant story– and what’s inside is even more interesting. How much do our refrigerators tell us about a moment in time in our lives? With this series, I intend to light heartedly showcase different people… and their refrigerators.

Justina is one of my favorite people and bloggers. She is always so creative and positive in life and in her blog that of course she’s perfect for the premier ‘what’s in your fridge’ series. (she’s also expecting a baby girl in July!)

 JUSTINA BLAKENEY

LOS ANGELES, EAST SIDE

DESIGNER, MAKER, MOVER + SHAKER

Justina, what’s the story behind one thing on the outside of your fridge?

What’s something that’s almost always in your fridge?

What’s one thing that’s NEVER been inside your fridge?

What’s something you often WISH was in there, but usually ISN’T?

What have you been snacking on lately?

KEVIN + AMY, Local 80

I am so excited to share Kevin + Amy’s wedding. It was recently featured on Green Wedding Shoes, but I wanted to share the wedding as well because it was not only beautiful, but really a lot of fun. We started off the day by driving to some nearby parks in Burbank. Amy looked absolutely stunning and she and Kevin are so clearly in love that I had so much fun photographing them.

As always, I love working with my office mates Bash Please. They always have impeccable design taste. How beautiful are the paper goods?

Local 80 was the perfect venue for them.

Their ceremony was sweet, heartfelt and original.

I can’t get enough of the back of Amy’s dress.

Cute bouts, from the lovely Bash Please. And the furniture from the vignettes are all from Found Vintage.

Heirloom LA provided all the delicious family-style dishes. And with the long tables and good company, it was truly like a family dinner party… but way more fun.

I really enjoyed Kevin + Amy’s wedding. They both are articulate, passionate and simply fun. They danced, performed karoake, ate, drank and then danced some more. They were both emotional and gracious throughout the night. Their friends and family were supportive (and funny too) and the team of vendors couldn’t be better.

Once again, congratulations Kevin + Amy… wishing you many many years of happiness.

(Oh, and on a side note, Kevin is an actor and I’ve had so much fun recently watching his character on Mad Men…)

A NOTE ON COMPARISON

After speaking to some friends and reading a lot of twitter comments lately, I see that a lot of people feel down about themselves and very isolated when they compare themselves to other people. And I realize that EVERYONE has felt this way before…. no one is immune to the comparison monster.

In running your own business (and in life I suppose), it’s nearly impossible not to compare yourself to others. Some of this is healthy, sure. However, when the comparison monster leads you to a downward spiral of shame and self-doubt that lasts for more than a 30 seconds, it’s time for a reality check.  There are so many talented people in the world, each with a different perspective.  There is always going to be someone who has come before you, who has been in the industry longer, who has more credits to their name, all while looking better in skinny jeans than you do. It’s ok. They have problems and fears, and they too have felt inadequate in their lives, probably after looking at your website. And, honestly, unless you’re a jcrew model, everyone thinks other people look better in skinny jeans.

Along the same note, watching a colleague have a major success can be bittersweet. It’s difficult not to feel jealous or… unworthy.  However, I honestly believe, (thanks to Eckhart Tolle), that if we want something in our life, we have to celebrate it everywhere we see it. If we want to be in love, we need to be happy when we see other people in love. If we want success in our business we need to sincerely celebrate our friends and colleagues when they have success in their businesses. We can’t deny someone else’s success and then expect such things to come to us.  Basically, if we aren’t happy for people’s successes, then no one will be happy for ours. You get what you give.

With that said, your real friends will always be happy for you.  And the people who aren’t are probably energy-suckers in general and your time is precious. On an ending note, what I try to remember is that no one is better than you and you are no better than anyone.  We all work the best when we have a team around us that supports us. That’s it for somewhat sappy life thoughts today.

Onward! (the photos of the ducks were taken outside my apartment)

MELLISSA + TORREY, Condor’s Nest

I wanted to share a few photos from Mel + Torrey’s wedding at Condor’s Nest Ranch (a favorite venue of ours). It was featured on Green Wedding Shoes, but I wanted to share a few more details.

Mel made all the DIY paper details herself and it was impressive! The board above was made with paper and chicken wire. Mel was so creative and put so much time into these details– and it looked amazing! I love the fun, playfulness of all the colors.

She even made paper flowers for the pool.

I love the bridesmaids dresses. I loved the length and the color palette. And if I’m not mistaken, they were hand-made by someone in the bridal party.

This cake was one of my favorites of all time. The color paletter, the macaroons- I’ve never seen anything like it!

I can’t say enough nice things about Mel + Torrey. Their wedding was so beautiful, sweet, and inspiring. All the details and her style came together to make a unique look that was really meaningful to them and anyone who celebrated with them. I feel so lucky to have been able to capture their day and wish them years and years and years of happiness.
